A guide created by a collective
of leading arts organisations to
help you develop a career in the
arts if you are not a performer

I actually get paid for

Staging a performance may rely upon the contribution of a whole range of specialists in the fields of set design, set construction, lighting, sound, stage management, scenic painting, prop making, costume design, costume making, millinery, wig making, hat and jewellery making. Most work on a freelance basis but many larger theatre venues have a permanent team of production staff where all these roles come together to form an organised department in charge of ‘getting the show on the road’ and converting the artistic visions of the directors and designers into a reality on the stage.
